Welcome to the DNA Bank Network Wiki!

These wiki sites should help you installing and using our open source software "DNA Module".

What is the DNA Module?

The DNA Module is an open source software for DNA data input and management. It was developed within the framework of the DNA Bank Network. The Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (BGBM) is in charge of development and support of this software.

Unique concept

The main idea of the DNA Module is to connect your DNA data to a specimen database via wrappers following the idea and data architecture of GBIF. Thereby specimen data will always be up-to-date because you get the data from the original database.

DNA data without specimen voucher information is useless. To ensure a taxonomic verification it is essential to provide DNA AND specimen data.

What is GBIF?

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility enables free and open access to biodiversity data online. It is an international government-initiated and funded initiative focused on making biodiversity data available to all and anyone, for scientific research, conservation and sustainable development. GBIF provides an information infrastructure – an Internet-based index of a globally distributed network of interoperable databases that contain primary biodiversity data – information on museum specimens, field observations of plants and animals in nature, and results from experiments – so that data holders across the world can access and share them. Why should I use the Module?

The Module is suitable for institutions that have or are planning to have a DNA bank.

Features

The Module offers several tools for data administration.

  • Input
  • Search/Edit
  • GenBank entries
  • Customer Requests
  • (Molecular) Publications
  • Specimens
  • Configuration
  • Data Cleaning

Please find out more about features here.

What are the legal aspects?

The software ist free and open source. By installing and using it you don't enter into a commitment.

Please note that it is possible but no obligation to share your DNA data with the DNA Bank Network's web portal.

What technical requirements are necessary?

The Module was optimised for PHP5 and MySQL5 (both free software). The database and the scripts has to be installed on a webserver so that more than one people can work with the Module. If only one person will be authorised to work with the Module a local installation is also possible.

Please note that it is obligate to install the Module on a webserver if you want to share your DNA data with the DNA Bank Network's web portal.

Please contact your local administrator to check these requirements.

How can I get it?

Who I may contact for further questions?
