What is the DNA Module?
The DNA Module is an open source software for DNA data input and management. It was developed within the framework of the DNA Bank Network.
To guarantee both the safeguarding and long-term availability of referenced DNA samples these should be deposited in research collections. Corresponding data including voucher/specimen information should to be stored in suitable collections databases.
What is GBIF?
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility enables free and open access to biodiversity data online. It is an international government-initiated and funded initiative focused on making biodiversity data available to all and anyone, for scientific research, conservation and sustainable development. GBIF provides an information infrastructure – an Internet-based index of a globally distributed network of interoperable databases that contain primary biodiversity data – information on museum specimens, field observations of plants and animals in nature, and results from experiments – so that data holders across the world can access and share them. [© GBIF] In September 2011 more than 302.000.000 specimen and observation data are available via the GBIF portal.
Why should I use the DNA Module?
The Module is suitable for institutions that have or are planning to have a DNA bank.
It is the only existing open source software for DNA relevant data so far!
If your institution doesn't have a specimen database yet the Specimen Tool which is part of the DNA Module might be suitable for you as well.
Features
The Module offers several tools for data administration.
- Input DNA data
- Any GBIF compliant specimen database worldwide can be accessed by the DNA Module
- Search/Edit DNA data
- Links to GenBank and BOLD entries
- Administrate Customer Requests
- Add (Molecular) Publications to DNA data
- Specimen Tool for DNA voucher data that are not available via GBIF
- Configuration Tool
- Data Cleaning
Please find out more about features here.
What are the legal aspects?
The software ist free and open source. By installing and using it you don't enter into a commitment.
What are the technical requirements?
The Module is optimised for PHP5 and MySQL5 (both free software). The database and the scripts has to be installed on a webserver so that more than one people can work with the Module. If only one person will be authorised to work with the Module a local installation is also possible.
Please contact your local administrator to check these requirements.
How can I get it?
The sourcecode of DNA Module 1.0 is available at http://ww2.biocase.org/svn/dnabank/DNA_Module/Version1.0. A second version will be available soon.
Who I may contact for further questions?
Please don't hesitate to contact the DNA Bank Network if you have any further questions!
