The DNA Bank Network was established in spring 2007 and was funded until 2011 by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The network was initiated by GBIF Germany (Global Biodiversity Information Facility). It offers a worldwide unique concept. DNA bank databases of all partners are linked and are accessible via a central web portal, providing DNA samples of complementary collections (microorganisms, protists, plants, algae, fungi and animals).

The Network is one of the founders of the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN) and will merge its data portal with the future GGBN data portal. GGBN and DNA Bank Network have similar goals and rules. All partners of the DNA Bank Network are members of the GGBN as well. Find out more about the GGBN at: [1].

The DNA Bank Network and the technical node of the GGBN are coordinated by the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (BGBM). The GGBN itself is coordinated by the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
